Approval of Rocky Reach AVA adds to the diversity of Washington State wine

Currently, Rocky Pond Estate Winery remains the only operating winery within Rocky Reach AVA. Additionally, the region contains eight vineyards, comprising 117 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, and other varieties. Vineyards include Double D, Rocky Reach, and Pierre Family, as well as Buena Vista, Keystone Ranch, Numeral Mountain, Ribbon Cliff, and Dick Mesa.

Annual compost application is one of the sustainable practices Rocky Pond Estate Winery adopted several years ago. This spring, the company certified its 160 acres of vineyards under the new Sustainable WA standard, which will help Rocky Pond sell grapes to customers who want to know more about where their wines come from, said director of viticulture Shane Collins.

The Rocky Reach AVA, Washington’s 20th, was certified a week or so ago. Getting a new AVA authorized is a costly, time-consuming and difficult process. So congratulations are in order.
